About Mere

Introduction

Mere is an attractive little town located in the Wiltshire Downs, close to the borders of Somerset and Dorset. The A303 runs past the town making it easy to reach from further afield, but once you’re in the town beautiful rural walks and views are within easy reach. Large areas around the town are designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Mere’s streets feature attractive period buildings constructed with local stone. The main square features the Mere Clocktower, a charming town clock that chimes the hours. From the square the URC Centre is just visible heading down Pettridge Lane.

Castle Hill and the rising Downs are a favourite destination for visitors and nature lovers. History enthuisiasts can explore the archaeological sites around White Sheet Hill, which includes Neolithic enclosures, circular earthworks, Bronze Age barrows and an Iron Age fort. While exploring the lovely walks, panoramic views open up to the south and the west offering views towards Shaftesbury and Stourhead.

  • Sprout & Flower are a green grocer that offer delicious coffee and cake, just within sight of the Centre
  • The George Inn offers traditional pub food at lunch and dinner and lies just beyond the town’s clock tower
  • Angel Tea Rooms offers breakfasts and light lunches and is situated just across the road from the George Inn
  • The Butt of Sherry is a friendly pub offering food and drinks and is situated just up Castle Street opposite the car park
  • The Walnut Tree Inn and Visit Hillbrush are slightly further away from the URC Centre, but are both worth seeking out for a delicious meal

Besides these options there is the Co-op Supermarket and a number of takeaways including Chinese, Kebabs and Fish and Chips.
